1. The Nature
Costa Rica accounts for .03% of the world’s surface, and yet it accounts for 6% of the world’s biodiversity. All of Costa Rica is lush and green, but nothing beats the oasis that is La Fortuna. Many species of trees, birds, flowers, and more can be found in La Fortuna, and it is one of the most prime places in the country to spot sloths. There is also a beautiful waterfall that’s well worth the 500-step trek down and back up!
2. The Adventure
Are you an adrenaline junkie looking for your next fix? Look no further than La Fortuna! There are hanging bridges, volcanic hikes, canyoning, zip-lining, cave-climbing, white water rafting, and much, much more. The absolute must is to explore the hanging bridges, which are unique to the area and cannot be found elsewhere.
3. The Food
To be honest, I was not expecting much out of Costa Rican cuisine, but everything I ate in La Fortuna was delicious, fresh, and affordable. You’d be a fool to visit and not try some local coffee and chocolates. My favorite shop was Chocolate Fusion, where I was able to try chocolates filled with passion fruit, tequila, rose, coffee, and more. It was so delicious that I went back three times and brought home a bag for my friends. If you’re looking for something savory, head to Snapper’s and get their famous whole fish topped with Panamanian peppers. Costa Rica also has some amazing hot sauces that you can buy to take home. I still use mine almost every morning on my eggs at home.
4. The Wildlife
What trip to Costa Rica would be complete without spotting some animals you’re unlikely to see anywhere else in the world? La Fortuna is the place to be for spotting snakes, spiders, sloths, and even little ants that carry leafs in a single-file line. Don’t be afraid of getting bit or stung by anything exotic; just be smart, wear bug-spray, and if you see an animal that you think might be dangerous, don’t disrupt it or get too close. One night, I went on a “boat safari” where I saw a baby crocodile, a few toucans, and more. Be aware that if you plan to photograph animals, you’ll need a good camera with a good lens. A phone camera simply won’t do it!
5. The Hot Springs
La Fortuna is home to several thermal springs, and it is the perfect way to soothe your sore muscles after indulging in some adventurous activities. I hiked Arenal Volcano and despite the hike being somewhat easy, I was still pretty sore. Treating myself to a warm thermal bath was the perfect way to treat myself on my last day in La Fortuna. There are several options to choose from, but I went to Ecotermales Fortuna, mainly because it is Arenal’s only TRUE natural hot spring. Also, they limit the number of people who can come in meaning it is a little more private and peaceful. The most famous is Tabacon. All hot springs come with an entry fee, and some include a drink, so it’s best to do your research beforehand to see which one best fits with what you’re looking for.
